A welcoming church website can help someone take their first step towards a community before they enter the building. For St Mary’s Church in Charlton Kings, Cheltenham, that welcome shaped our recently completed website redesign and WordPress build.

At Devon Design, we wanted the website to reflect the people, worship and activities that give parish life its character. However, a warm first impression needed practical information behind it.

The challenge involved bringing those two needs together: helping people feel welcome and helping them find their way.

Every Visit Begins With a Different Question

Someone exploring St Mary’s for the first time might want to understand what happens during a Sunday service. Meanwhile, a regular worshipper might simply need the latest pew sheet.

A couple planning their wedding will arrive with different questions from somebody searching for a concert or venue information. Therefore, the website needed several clear starting points.

Navigation groups information around services, activities, life events, venue hire, music and practical church information. Rather than expecting visitors to understand parish organisation, these routes begin with the subjects people recognise.

That principle connects directly with our UX UI design approach: organise the experience around the person using it.

Making the First Visit Feel Less Unfamiliar

Attending somewhere new can raise small but important questions. What kind of service should I choose? Where will I go? Can I find out more before arriving?

The website gives different worship formats their own explanations within a consistent service structure. Visitors can explore Holy Communion, Parish Communion, All Age worship, Breaking Bread and evening services.

Consequently, the information introduces choices instead of presenting an unexplained list of names. Seasonal service pages follow the same clear approach, bringing photographs, dates and descriptions together.

Additionally, directions combine maps with travel guidance, helping people prepare for the journey. These details help turn general interest into a more informed next step.

Showing the People Behind the Building

A church building provides a recognisable landmark, but its community gives the website its human story. Photographs of worship, celebrations and parish activities bring that story into the design.

Alongside them, the stained-glass emblem provides a familiar visual connection with St Mary’s identity. Deep blue panels, turquoise buttons and generous spacing give the information a consistent framework.

However, the visual approach does more than establish an attractive appearance. It helps separate subjects, highlight useful links and maintain continuity as visitors explore different pages.

Our website design work connects those creative choices with the practical purpose of each page.

Keeping the Community Connected Between Sundays

Parish life continues throughout the week, so the website needs to support more than occasional visits. The dedicated pew sheet brings together service information, readings, prayers and the parish diary.

Clear sections give returning visitors a familiar place to find the information they need. Meanwhile, we adapted the WordPress blog area into a visual home for church news and events.

Image-led cards introduce concerts, community gatherings, fundraising appeals and special services. Each item then leads towards a fuller explanation, keeping the overview manageable without losing important detail.

This publishing structure gives ongoing parish updates a consistent home alongside the main website pages.

Making Space for Life’s Significant Moments

People also turn to a church during times of celebration, change and loss. Therefore, baptisms, weddings and funerals need thoughtful presentation and clear routes towards further help.

The life-event pages introduce these subjects separately, allowing each one the space and tone it needs. Wedding information guides couples towards practical next steps and the people who can support them.

Elsewhere, choir information and venue-hire routes show further ways to connect with the church. Together, these areas present St Mary’s as part of everyday community life as well as a place of worship.

Carrying the Welcome Onto Smaller Screens

The same information needs to remain useful when somebody checks it on a phone. Our responsive layouts carry the church’s identity into a compact menu and vertically arranged content.

Photographs, headings and text panels follow a consistent reading sequence across the smaller presentation. Prominent routes to online worship, safeguarding and donations also give important information a clear place within the wider structure.

The aim throughout was continuity: a recognisable St Mary’s experience across desktop and mobile layouts.

A Website With Community at Its Centre

For this project, success meant bringing welcome, useful information and ongoing parish communication into one coherent online home. The design gives St Mary’s room to share its character while helping different visitors find a relevant next step.
