St Mary's Church Website Design Case Study

Church website design for St Mary’s Charlton Kings

Devon Design created the church website design and WordPress build for St Mary’s Church in Charlton Kings, Cheltenham.

Our work brings worship, parish news and community activities together through a consistent design across desktop and mobile layouts.

Above all, the website presents the church as a welcoming place where people can worship, celebrate and get involved.

Bringing parish identity into the design

A recognisable welcome

The circular stained-glass emblem takes a prominent position beside the church name, giving each page a familiar identity.

Alongside this, the Diocese of Gloucester and Church of England logos show the parish’s wider connections.

We paired these elements with a spacious white header, allowing each part of the identity room to breathe.

Meanwhile, photographs of the building, congregation and celebrations introduce the people and places at the heart of parish life.

Consistent colours and page layouts

Deep blue content panels anchor the design, with turquoise buttons drawing attention to the next step.

In addition, pale backgrounds separate sections, helping visitors distinguish introductory text from detailed information.

Wide photographic banners introduce individual pages, with translucent blue title bands and fine purple accents creating a consistent style.

For example, the Weddings page opens with a ceremony photograph that immediately establishes its subject.

White rose-window motifs repeat throughout the introductory sections, linking the inner pages visually to the church emblem.

Church website design around visitor needs

The main navigation groups information under Services, What’s On, Life Events, Venue Hire, Music, About and Contact.

Consequently, visitors can begin with a familiar subject before exploring the more detailed pages beneath it.

Separate header links highlight online worship, safeguarding and donations, keeping these useful routes visible above the main menu.

Likewise, the footer brings together parish contacts, directions, the pew sheet and website policy links.

This structure gives regular visitors repeatable routes to information while helping newcomers understand the range of parish activities.

Making worship information easier to browse

Services and seasonal worship

The Services page combines photographs, short explanations and clear buttons for the schedule, online worship and seasonal services.

In particular, the schedule uses separate blue panels to distinguish worship options and explain their different formats.

Visitors can explore Holy Communion, Parish Communion, All Age worship, Breaking Bread and evening services within the same visual structure.

Similarly, the Christmas page presents individual services with photographs, dates and descriptions in a consistent sequence.

This approach gives people space to compare services and choose an occasion that suits their family or interests.

A dedicated pew sheet

The pew sheet page brings together service details, readings, prayers and the parish diary in one place.

Furthermore, its welcome message offers newcomers a friendly introduction before they reach the detailed weekly information.

Clear headings divide the content into sections, helping readers locate the part of parish life they want to follow.

Adapting the WordPress blog for parish news

We adapted the blog area to present church news and events through a visual grid of individual posts.

As a result, visitors can browse illustrated items covering concerts, community gatherings, fundraising appeals and special services.

Each card combines an image, a title and a link to further information, giving the listing a consistent rhythm.

For instance, the supplied designs feature Come and Sing events, the village fête and the tower fundraising appeal.

Individual posts continue the page styling and provide a route back to the full news listing.

Supporting life events and community connections

The Life Events page introduces baptisms, weddings and funerals through separate panels, photographs and clearly labelled buttons.

Additionally, the Weddings page guides couples towards practical next steps and the people who can help them.

The choir page gives music its own space, with photographs, membership details and clearly separated information about rehearsals.

Elsewhere, the directions page combines maps with travel guidance, helping visitors plan their journey before leaving home.

Together, these pages show how the parish supports people through worship, friendship, celebration and significant moments in life.

Creating consistent desktop and mobile layouts

Our responsive church website design carries the same colours, imagery and identity into the mobile presentation.

On smaller screens, the header rearranges its elements and replaces the horizontal navigation with a compact menu button.

Next, content follows a vertical reading order, with photographs and text panels stacking to fit the narrower layout.

The mobile designs retain prominent page titles and clearly separated sections, helping visitors recognise their location within the website.

A website that reflects parish life

The project brings together a distinctive visual identity, organised information and a WordPress publishing structure for ongoing parish updates.

Ultimately, St Mary’s gains a coherent online home that reflects its worship, community activities and welcome to visitors.
